History
Between 1991 and 1994, UBC Properties Trust developed Faculty & Staff Housing in Fairview/Acadia to serve the growing need for short-term (three year maximum) accommodation for new faculty & staff. UBC Properties Trust constructed 268 rental units under the direction of UBC Housing & Conferences, who currently own and manage these buildings.
Following their initial development for Housing & Conference, UBC Properties Trust leased a parcel of land from UBC to further maintain the need for Faculty & Staff Housing. This followed the implementation of TREK 2000, which identified Faculty Renewal as an important objective for the following eight years. This need was further emphasized by the CCP requiring that 20% of the proposed housing at UBC be rental.
In 2001, UBC Properties Trust constructed Phase 1 (Azalea House & Sumac House) of Faculty & Staff Rental housing in Mid Campus. Azalea House consisted of 11 row townhomes, and Sumac House a combination of two-level cityhomes and one and two bedroom apartments.
In 2002 Village Gate Homes was founded as a third party property management company to manage these two developments.
Phase II (Cascara House) was completed in 2002 and provided an additional 36 one, two and three
bedroom apartment units.
Phase III (Gardenia House) was completed in Summer 2004. It consists of 60 one, two and three bedroom
apartment units. Phase III is a non smoking building.
Phase IV (Tamarack House) was completed in December 2006. This building includes two bedroom and two bedroom plus den apartments as well as three bedroom apartments and two-level cityhomes. Phase IV is a non smoking building.
Phase V, Larkspur House, was completed in 2009. It is centrally located within UBC’s new Wesbrook Village mere minutes from a number of daily conveniences including the brand new Save-on-Foods store. Larkspur House is a 46 unit complex containing 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments as well as 2 and 3 bedroom two-level cityhomes.
2012 saw the completion of our two newest residences – Dahlia House and Magnolia House. Dahlia House is comprised of 60 units including 1, 2 and 3 bedroom unit layouts. Magnolia House, meanwhile, is a 47-unit apartment building, also offering 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units. Both buildings are located on the west side of Wesbrook Mall and Ross Drive. The two buildings share a nice big central courtyard– with ample room for games, picnics, and bbqs. Dahlia House is our first pet friendly building.
